The best thing I've ready lately about everyone's sitch was from the Rejoice Ministries website a few weeks back. It said that if you give up today, you won't feel any less pain tomorrow. I'd say that's true for the kids as well...they aren't going to hurt any less tomorrow if you give up on your M today.
