Like you said, you need a date for these things. At the least, you could come out the other side of this 'social season' with a good friend you like to hang out with....nothing says you have to run off to vegas with the first fun/sexy/interesting gal you meet....
So if you find her attractive, and she finds you appealing, why not hang out together? Beats a kick in the head...
