Yes things are looking better for my dad. He is alot of pain today. My mom said that she hopes he doesn't give up because he sounds so discouraged. I told her that it will get better and better every day. For goodness sakes it is just the day after a major surgery. I just keep praying. I really think he will be fine.
Hi YR, so pleased your dad made it through, it is quite common for the pain and discomfort to be worse the following days after the op, as the body loses the anaestetic. He is definately on the right side of things now. I hope he mades slow and steady progress. This has been a rough time for you all.
The best thing for my dad is rest and recouperation. My mom and sister went to see him but he was in such pain they only stayed for a few minutes. Dad doesn't want any visitors right now. They are still going to see him later in the day.
My dad knew about the pain after surgery but I don't think he knew it was this bad. The doctor told him that it was going to be bad but it will get better as time goes on.
I think he will be fine once the pain subsides a little.
YR if your dad is still in pain he should tell his doctors and they can increase his pain medication to help with this. It is what is called rebound pain. Because he has been anaethetised and then given pain medication as it starts to wear off the pain receptors in the body go 'Wow what happened here?' It's a bit like when someone tries to give up smoking and they get the cravings for nicotine. The good news is that the doctors should be able to 'fine tune' your dad's pain medication to help relieve the discomfort and then gradually withdraw it again once he starts to heal and the inflammation goes down.

You can bet my dad has asked for more pain meds. He is not very good with dealing with pain. He has to realise that they cut his breastbone in half. They replaced 4 arteries in his heart with a graft from his leg. He was in surgery for over 8 hours and that in itself is hard on anyone having to go through this major surgery.
He has to also realise that it has only been 1 day since surgery. My dad don't like to rely on anyone, he has always been so independant and now he has to. I think it has hit home for him.
the pain will eventually subside in a few days. He'll realize he can't be and do all that he was doing before and that he needs to take it easier. But, he's a fighter and survived this!
Thanks FG. My dad is doing better today. I finally got to talk to him. They took his chest tubes out today so he probably will feel alot better. This is the start of the recovery and I am so happy he made it through this!
My dad is doing okay. His blood pressure has been dropping and it went to 48/19 tonight. His heart is beating too fast and they are going to put a pace maker in tomorrow. My mother is so the one that I am worried about now. She almost had 2 accidents today because of all that she has on her mind.
One thing good is that they are having a nurse come to their home daily to take care of my dad when he gets home. I hope that takes some of the stress off of my mother. I think once my dad gets home they both will relax.
