I just popped in here for some inspiration. I like to read Piecing People's threads as I hope I am getting closer to that with my h.
I very much identified with your observation of the LBS getting easily spooked and I wish I had a good way to tell h that or have some sort of code that signified that I was 'spooked' and needed reassurance. Of course, that part is probably easy because it's in my control to say something. What is not in my control is his reaction. Will he reassure me in the way that I want? don't know....that's the scary part.

I'm back from my long awaited hols to Barcelona,Spain, as you may know the planned romantic break for two turned into a family holiday for three. For those that are interested there was no nudge, nudge, W monthly cycle and a very vigilante D7 put paid to that, but that didn't stop us all having a very, very, very good time together.
W and I got on fine all of the time, but she did have a few upper class "Brit abroad" moments, mainly aimed at incompetent waiters, or dozy sales assistants, classic moment was W saying "These Spanish are lovely people but they need to learnt to speak a bit more English".
W was impressed with my grasp of the language which actually only extended to Hola, Gracias, Adios, Uno Grande Beer, Uno XL T-shirt. Also some international sign language, hand firmly out to stop the on coming traffic, middle finger up at the impatient drivers who beeped their horns when not wanting to stop.
So all in all it was a fun trip, so much to see, not enough time to do it, definately a city to return to. Next year W wants to venture to Rome, Italy (on a budget) I'm up for that, but for now back to reality.
...and if I still live here, the year after you should be visiting Athens!!!
or if you are in New York again we can meet up, W has family and friends there.

Not just my W, this is a very common attitude for the "Brit Abroad", the whole world is expected to speak English.
I can vouch for the brits expecting everyone to speak English. We are very lazy when it comes to other languages !!
Glad it went well sir. I'm considering not going to Disney with my family now. Really not sure I can hack it now I want out. When I was still hoping, yes, but now, seems a little odd thing to do.
