I need ideas on how I can improve my relationship with my XW without being obvious. I am tired of fighting and all this other crap.

Humility will be needed in abundance.
Choose your battles wisely.
Some things you think you have to take a stand for...there are other failsafes that will stand on your behalf and you never have to do or say anything at all...like doctors and school for instance.
It's all going to boil down to humility though. Seriously.
You place your children in God's hands each day. And you just be a father. Trusting YOUR Father.
He will keep them.
You keep you and when that becomes a struggle, before you open your mouth or fire off an email, you stop and talk to Him.
You die to self and swallow your pride.
He will tell you when it is time to stand up for something and if and when that time comes, He will give you the tools to do so.
