What is the worst that could happen? You are expressing how you feel about her.

I would send a dozen roses with baby's breath, color of your choice! Now the card could just read Happy Birthday, Sooners or Love Sooners.

I talk to my in-laws. They are supportive and are amazed by my standing. Even asked if I was dating or I was interested in someone. They think h is being held back by pride and stupidity. H's mom is hurt by h's actions. My h comes from a very loving family. Unfortunately h is not talking with them, his choice. He did talk with his brother the other day when he called our home.
