You have got to stop doing stuff like that! I know, you know! You set yourself back, but I think that you are right, you can recover from it. But it will take time. And you are not going to get many more "chances". Learn from it, and try to put it behind you!
Someone whom you have known for a long time may move away, or otherwise vanish from your life. They may move to a distant state, traveling by air. You'll probably stay in touch by telephone or email, but it'll never be the same - at least not for a long time. You'll feel better if you meet some new people, who will come your way today, possibly through group activities with humanitarian aspirations.

I agree, dropping the rope, so to speak, is a good plan. Learn more about yourself. I have the feeling that there is a lot more to you than you have discovered!
I think dark is a good way to do it. Or at least dim. Let him make the contact, and don't try to stretch it out. Maybe let calls go to voicemail more than you usually do. I think that when you have too much contact with him, you put too much pressure on yourself, and that leads to these slip-ups.
Jeff, I think I'll try that for a while. It's true I do put pressure on myself when I'm around him. At this point I think I will limit contact as much as possible.
