If I remember right Jen, didn't he say it would be best because it would give you guys a clean slate to start over also?
And he is right, this is better for you both. Healthier all around. And just because its better for you both, does not mean he isn't going to eventually come home. He wanted a healthier R with you, and that is what you are learning to give him. You want to be in a better place. That's the goal.
