Most animal behaviorists recommend giving the cat alternatives to the furniture for scratching and using positive reinforcement when the cat scratches the tree or pole instead of the furniture.

Declawing is actually removing the last digit of their "finger", it isn't just removing the nail.

I personally would never do it. I would personally just consider it a last resort. Just my opinion!
