I know that you are a nervous wreck. I saw on the news this morning that some have started evacuating already. What is N going to do? Has she answered the phone yet? It's so much easier when they are little, isn't it?

Nothing has happened yet. They are closing Tulane at noon today, and people are supposed to start evacuating from New Orleans tomorrow. The storm track has been pushed a little further to the west, but really, the storm hasn't moved in 2 days, so it's all conjecture at this point. She will not be in her house in New Olreans; she would be north of the lake where land is at 10-15 feet above sea level. I don't know if there will be an evacuation north of the lake. That is what I need to find out. Either she will be alone in the house in the country, or with her roommates' parents in their house (which did not have any damage during Katrina).
I will wait til after noon her time and start calling again. I just want to know where she will be and who she will be with. But it would have been a good time to come home and visit her mother!

I agree! Tell her this would be a good time to try out her new car on a road trip!!!
My girls are both going out of town this weekend about 4 hours away. I'm stressing over that, I can't imagine what you are going through!

As of now they aren't planning on evacuating on the north shore.
Accardo was on the news this morning (St. Tammany Emergency Management) and they just don't have time lines yet. They are meeting with the parish government at noon. Those in fema trailors and with special needs are going to be evacuated at some point. Probably. Maybe.
The weekend is supposed to be calm so nothing should happen while N is house-sitting. The way it's slowed down, that's pretty much a given, but it'll probably start raining (hard) on Monday.
Post offices have announced they're closing. No mail pickup/delivery from mailboxes after today at noon.
I hate watching it come towards us. There is just no way to know what will happen until it gets closer. Maybe.
Thanks for the update. It's good that it won't hit til after the weekend (if at all). Sometimes it's so disappointing when you prepare for a storm and then nothing at all happens. But that is what you hope for.
As long as the Northshore is not being evacuated, then I guess I shouldn't worry. We stayed through lots of storms where they did evacuate up to I-12, and the only real problem was losing power. They always seemed to turn the power off before the storm hit. Then it was days to get it back on. I don't know if they evacuated above I-12 for Katrina. I had a friend on Military Road in Covington whose house was somehow pushed a little bit off the slab by Katrina. And that is far north of 12.
Yoyo, I always worry when my kids are traveling. It makes me feel so vulnerable. I hope they will be safe.
I have no problem getting ready and it not showing up. If it does, we'll be safe, but will lose "stuff" and probably be pretty uncomfortable til things get up and running. Now I'm worried about flooding, but have a bunch of tubs, tarps and large garbage bags...yuk. I hate yukky stuff.
The noon report out of Covington said the north shore expectations are 35-75 mph winds late monday thru wednesday. That's a huge range. Lines at the centers where they are giving out sand bags have been steady since 7am. They are worried about a 9-12 ft.tidal surge (?) that they didn't worry about w/ Katrina? I need a translator. lol.
Now, if N comes home, what about Gustav's friend Hanna?
Argh.
I gotta get to a store before they run out of beer....
I know, and 2 more storms are on the way behind that. Are you near the Tchefuncta? They are worried about storm surge because the storm is predicted to come in west of New Orleans. That will push water counter-clockwise on the east side of the side of the storm. Which means it will push water into Lake Pontchartrain. Tchefuncta will flow north due to the pressure from Lake Pontchartrain, so there will be flooding in the area of brackish water, probably up to about Covington. And that would back up all the bayous leading into the Tchefuncta. So you don't want to staying near a flowing waterbody. For Katrina the large storm surge from Pontchartrain was projected to be onto the N.O. Lakefront. which it was. But Lakeshore Drive in Mandeville was flooded I think up to Monroe St. My son was living there at the time.
Still, it's called the 100 year storm because you don't get them every 3 years. I'm hoping statistics are right.
