Hello beautiful. What happens to the retainer you gave current L if you decide to switch to a new one?

When you get a divorce, is it a MUST to go with lawyer OR mediation? Is there no other way? I'll be seeing a couple lawyers this week (or next) and just want to get this over with as quickly, painlessly and inexpensively as possible.
