Your friend has given you good advice......you have nothing to be upset about.
The only thing I would sugggest to you is to bury the expectations, go into your get togethers with no preconcieved notion of what it should be like, whatever you do , no matter how good it is will never live up to it. If you go in with a "go with the flow" attitude you will never be disappointed and you will have a great time......the expectation and excitment is what got you upset
