Do what you have to do now, then drop the rope, for real. It's DBing, it's not giving up. But, you have to let him go. And then just live for you and D. He's going to have to sink or swim on his own. And I think there's going to be a lot of sinking before there is swimming. But, if you try to rescue him, he's going to pull you right under with him. Get the LS, and let go. You have a bunch of friends who will stick with you. And some of them are close enough for real hugs, if you need them.
