You have gotten such good advice about your daughter already but it reminded me of this really good book I read called "Why We Do What We Do". Basically it is about how almost all of our culture/society is based on controlling people... but people really don't respond to control very well! So, it is always better to nurture the instrinsic rewards than extrinsic rewards. Obviously I am not a Mom so what do I know but I don't like the equation obedience=reward that much. I prefer something like exploration=fulfillment and discovery...
