1. guess who called me today... CAROLE MAGGIO, inventor of FACERCISE!!!! I emailed her a question about my eyelid, and she emailed me back asking me for my number. When she called I didn't pick up b/c I didn't recognize the number but she left a really nice message! She said she wanted to respond to my email personally b/c my email was so "cute". (OD, I told her that I have a 34 year old friend who now looks better than she did at 21 b/c of facercise.... that's you!!!) She totally answered my question in great detail. Awesome! It was like getting a phone call from... madonna, or oprah or MWD or something!
2. Then, my cello teacher asked me to check out this cello she is not sure if she will keep or sell. I played on it... it was AMAZING. She asked me what I thought it was worth, I said, I dunno, a ton of money? It turns out it costs less than the cello I already have, but it sounds and feels INSANELY AMAZING... so if she decides to sell it I told her I want it. I couldn't put it down, I couldn't stop playing, I just felt so powerful, and free. Wow!! I had no idea I could maybe get a grownup cello so soon!! One of her proteges has one and uses it instead of his insanely expensive many-centuries-old-cello b/c he likes it better, and I can see why!!
Then, I came home after running some errands and found this in my inbox, sent at 9 am this morning (Friday) in response to my wednesday afternoon text (if I remember correctly):
Transformer,
Yes, I also read about Mark Morris' [his favorite choreographer] new Romeo and Juliet idea [the theme of the new ballet I texted him about] - but from the Times. He is such a smart man: I think this is amazing PR for a director in his 50s or 60s. I've heard comments about how the MMDG only does one thing, or that the company hasn't done anything new in the past decade, or that Morris doesn't "have it in him" anymore. But, after that article, doesn't everybody *have* to go see this? I mean, it's the NEW Romeo and Juliet! He is a genius!
Anyway, I'm taking a break from camp right now, hanging out in nyc with XXXX [his brother] because he is in town for 36 hours. Plus, YYYY [a friend from Boston] is going to ring the doorbell any minute now. Party! But camp is nice, and I'm actually enjoying being there: its right on the beach, i'm biking a lot, I'm practicing a bit, and the other counselors there are great. And, the money isn't bad. Good times. I hope you are well, and thanks for the text.
Cheers! B
????????????????????????????????????????????????
Not sure what to make of this? He sounds positive, and I guess he sent an email instead of texting me back b/c he had more to say than would fit in the text. It's upbeat... he volunteered info about his life at camp and who he's spending time with. He REALLY responded enthusiastically to my mention of his favorite choreographer!
Ironically, the new ballet that he and I are disucussing is a version of Romeo and Juliet where they don't die at the end. (!!) The composer prokofiev originally composed it that way, but it was so radical he had to change the ending back to the original shakespeare doom and gloom death version to please the communist censors.
It doesn't exactly invite a response, but then again, neither did my text, so maybe he did that on purpose? The "fun times" seems maybe a little fakey, like something you would say to an acquaintance or distant family member instead of a friend. The "cheers" at the end is weird, WTF does that mean??? Whatev. "I hope you are well, and thanks for the text" is positive.
2. share bitlets of my life... the new cello possibility, planting beans with my family, watching fireworks from my roof?
3. thank him for the tip about the contacts and tell him I am enjoying my newly ordered contacts (FOR ALL WHO WERE CONCERNED, I do have a years' supply of fresh contacts now)
some combination of the above? or subset thereof?
I guess the most important thing is to keep the ball bouncing back and forth, and then after a few more communications let him know I'll be in NYC again. I guess it's weird if I'm always the one saying "I saw this and thought of you" but ... maybe that's the way the cookie crumbles?
eagerly awaiting your advisements, as always.... ((((((((EVERYONE)))))))) LOVE TRANSFORMER
Hmmmmmmmm........ I think I'd be tempted to go with the bitlets, probably including the contacts. To me that feels like inviting him into your life. And in a way, it follows up well with what he wrote, too.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I nearly fell off my chair! It's taken me 10 minutes to manage to write this because I keep laughing. That's SO FUNNY T- you're nearly famous!! What was your eyelid question, by the way? SO AWESOME!!!!!! It is totally like having MWD just call up. Brilliant!!
YAY on the response from B- it's pretty long aswell, given the text can't have been more than a couple of sentences. Great news!
I'd go with an upbeat reply sharing tidbits about your life, and including the info about the contacts as he can respond to that. Respond in the same tone- friendly, but with a little distance (I thought the cheers at the end was indicative of that- very matey). On the other hand, I think that him treating you in a matey way right now is pretty good- friendship stage and all that! Also, can you include a little response and Romeo and Juliet in some way? He sounds so excited and positive about that so it'd be nice to continue it!
I agree with My Lady. I think in principle it's agood thing he emailed such a long answer. You have to keep the communication "flowing". Do not put any pressure just continue what you are doing. But wait a bit. Don't email immediately back. You know the drill (spell Jeff?). Love K
I still haven't bought that book. I need to do it. It was amzing that she called you!!!
OMG guys, thank you so much for your support and advice!!!
Jeff, I like what you said about the bitlets inviting him into my life!! (((J))))
OD, It was so exciting to hear from Carole Maggio, I'm so glad you are excited tooo!!! My family got totally pumped (they are really into facercise now) and I knew you would get it My question was about my right upper eyelid... it is slightly droopier than my left, and my brother and Mom have it too. I think it gets droopier and more obvious as time goes by. I asked Carole how to adapt facercise for facial assymetries and she said you can always isolate one side and work it more, but for that particular problem she said I should just do exercise #1 four times a day and squeeze my eyes shut really hard. I just started doing the advanced exercises yesterday and I am really excited for the under eye hollow lifting!!! Good point also on responding to his enthusiasm about R & J. (((OD)))
K, thank you so much for your advice.. and for encouraging me to keep things flowing, but not too fast. Facercise is fun!!!! You should try it and then we can be part of the international facercise fan club, of which perhaps OD and I can be the founding members!!!
Update... things are kind of quiet... I had an AMAZING cello lesson with my teacher yesterday and have been feeling both very inspired & very exhausted by practicing 4 hours a day. Today I declared a "day off".
Yes!! I totally know what you mean about MMDG [his favorite choreographer] Romeo & Juliet!! After I read the article I looked up the performance dates on his website, like, "WHEN CAN I SEE IT???" The music always moved me so much when I did ballet when I was little [this is true, i'm not exaggerating], I can't imagine what MM would do, he is so musical, it would probably make me weep with joy [he did before]. I mean it's like finding an alternative version of beethoven's 9th or something! Maybe you will get invited to play in the pit orchestra??!!
I'm glad that you're having fun at camp and got to hang with your brother and with C in NYC! I'm back in ATL after another week in VA with my family. My mom and I planted a bunch of beans and squash together and my brother and I bonded while looking at native american garments at the smithsonian and watching HGTV. Now I'm back in ATL ... And I may have found a new cello that blows my mind! Well, thanks for your email, I hope you're doing awesome.
take care, T
After I get your comments I will send it to keep things flowing. It has already been I think 2 1/2 days or something... longer than he waited to get back to me. Someday I hope to be able to compose emails to him without feeling the need to get bulletin board approval, but for some reason I feel it's easier to get the tone right when I compose the emails in my posts...
