St. John's is reputed to have the most bars per capita of any city in North America; George Street in downtown St. John's is reputed to have the most bars per square foot in North America.
When I was in the US Coast Guard, I was told that St John's was the town to make a port of call at. Lots of girls would be lined up at the dock waiting to take a foreign coasty home. Sadly, I was stationed on the west coast and mostly made ports of call in the Aleutian islands of Alaska where we were told there is a girl behind every tree....I found out later there were no trees in the Aleutians.
