You know, I believe that at some level many of them KNOW that we still love them. I have actually had this confirmed by a former MLCer, who said 'I always knew I could and would go home'[and that was a crazy one]
My kids are convinced that my h would be totally freaked out if I started dating. [Actually I think they would too, for all they tell me that they wouldn't!] But who knows. Ultimately we have to live as we think best for us and our family, and if we do start a new r, with regard to that person too, and not with one eye on our crazy spouse.
