CW, it sounds like you have an impressive work background. Why wouldn't you go back into marketing/PR? Not that there's anything wrong with being a radiology tech, of course.

You're inspiring me to think this way. I have worked for the past 12 years--but part-time, freelance and at home (as a writer) so that I could also care for my kids. It's completely terrifying to contemplate re-entering the real work world and I'm not sure what I would do.

One of my regrets is that I didn't go to medical school. Maybe now is the time for me to tell H that's what I plan to do--ha ha ha!

I hate being in this position at 44. It feels too late to start a new career. I've also considered going the gold-digging route--you know, find a 90 year old billionaire and marry him.

Education rarely goes to waste even if you don't use it in the way you think you will. Sign up for a class or two and ease back into it. The more you can get done now, the less you have to tackle later.

When he points out it was your choice to not finish college, you should just smile and go yes, just like you chose to get married and have two children. We each have to live with our choices. I'm mean, I know. But "whatever you do today, you'll have to sleep with tonight."

Aaron Tippin "You've Got To Stand For Something"

Now Daddy didn't like trouble, but if it came along
Everyone that knew him knew which side that he'd be on
He never was a hero, or this county's shinin' light
But you could always find him standing up
For what he thought was right

He'd say you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
You've got to be your own man not a puppet on a string
Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything

Now we might have been better off or owned a bigger house
If Daddy had done more givin' in or a little more backing down
But we always had plenty just living his advice
Whatever you do today you'll have to sleep with tonight

He'd say you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
You've got to be your own man not a puppet on a string
Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything

Now I know that things are different than they were in Daddy's days
But I still believe what makes a man really hasn't changed

You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
You've got to be your own man not a puppet on a string
Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything

You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything

LMG, my work background is more impressive in a large consumer marketing market. Otherwise, I was just a secretary and marketing coordinator and they miss the specific skill set I earned. I would have much less of a hard time in Chicago, NYC, San Francisco, LA, Denver or Atlanta. But, it is what it is. Also, the firm in SF has since closed, been absorbed in a merger. I know I could get great references from them, but would have to track the people down. I only keep in touch with one or two from there.

The radiology tech is the "safe" job. $8000 for two years of schooling, pretty much guaranteed jobs anywhere.

Michelle, I love your response regarding our choices! hehehe

Oh yeah. Forgot to add on the end there, obviously all choices are only made in the moment and subject to change w/o notice.

I want to go back to school NOW! \:D

Lastly, PR in Sacramento stinks. The firm I worked for actually has an office here and the guy who heads it I used to work with back in the Chicago office. However, it's a one-person office that just deals with gov't affairs, not the practice I was in. I also don't think I want to go back into PR, the ethical side of it really bothered me and am glad to be out of it. If I could do product PR, it's better because really, who cares if you eat at McDonald's (my old client) or Burger King? But when I had to help prepare a program to help a power plant tell its 2000 employees they were going to close right before the holidays, it wore on me. Telling all these suits (who were upset it was closing) how to behave at press conferences and what to say to employees and the like to not show emotion just didn't sit well with me.

Yeah, one of my best friends had the same problem. She's working in SF now because she couldn't get a job in Sac that she wanted. But since she's single and no kids, she could move easily.

His attitude bugs me. There's a shocker! I don't see what relevance the choice you made almost 20 years ago has to do with what would be best for you now, as far as education goes! Does he mean that we should all finish learning before we are 25, and never learn any more?

Hey CW - sneaking on for a bit.

You H's attitude stinks about your education - he needs a reality check here. You are doing this so you can provide a great life for HIS kids. I am a lifelong educator and to think that your H is being so selfish as to not support you really ticks me off - but that and a quarter will get you a phone call.

Like the others are saying, you may want to grab one of those science classes at the local community college just to get back into the swing of studying!

I wish we had an opening in our Sacto office - it is a two person show, but we have great benefits - we would pay for your college as well as a good portion of your kids when it is time! If for some miracle, the person leaves in the next couple of months, I will let you know! \:\) All my connections are in education policy, wish it was more exciting work - we do have a marketing arm, but they are in NYC...

Just know been thinking about your sitch and hoping you are doing well.

Education. hehehe. My H works for a student information software arm of a big education focuses company that publishes numerous brands of textbooks as well as multiple SIS systems.

Let me know whenever, even if it's more than a couple months from now.
