Well, AG wanted me to elaborate on the chicken part...
In my town it is legal to have a backyard flock of six or less HENS. I don't have a flock anymore, but we have kept pet chickens on and off for ages. You don't need a rooster to get eggs, and if you don't have any baby plants, the chickens will to a good job of scratching and eating whatever bugs they find. I was amazed at how many bugs I ended up having after I got rid of the coop (Through attrition, not anything else...)
Plus they are colorful and entertaining! The downside is that Argo went absolutely NUTS!
