Yep, me, too, and I was 5. Totally despised every man that came into my mom's life after she and my dad split up. No matter how much my mom liked any of them, I hated them that much more.
I think my wife has no idea of how children really feel about all this stuff. Or she just wants to convince herself otherwise. She seems to think that she can just find another man to replace me, and it will just be fine with our children, because they would "want mommy to be happy".
