My H was the same way about my parents and also my brother. I can understand it. He feels guilty around then and like he let them down too.
It took him a while before he would see my mom and then finally did it. Now he is getting more and more comfortable around her. It will just take time for both him and your parents to get that comfort back. Hopefully your mom will realize that people make mistakes and she will respect your decisions.
