I don't think you should overlook the possibility that your wife thinks you left her alone and aren't interested in being with her. Maybe you are not getting a big welcome because she feels you rejected her to go off on your own for your birthday.
And you know what I think. If you and she don't talk to each other, how can you have anything but misunderstandings? That is the whole point of language -- communication. If you don't use it, you have problems.
