I have always looked at that as simply meaning strong enough to withstand an attack.

It is more than that.

Believers are strengthened AGAINST attack.
Which seems to imply to me that the attack will not be able to hurt us.

This is taking me way back.
Once I did a word study on the word crucifixion and found that the original word led to the word "palisade" which means "One of the pales of a fence"

Now check this out, when that word is used as a verb it means:

To equip or fortify with palisades or a palisade.

THIS WILL PREACH!!!!
