Of course not. The sentence in its entirety begins with Can't wait... and ends with ...the Prof" once you have finished the sentence you put the full-stop (period). If "Lil and the Prof" were a sentence (which it isn't because it's the title of a story) then you might want to put two full stops, one to finish the sentence within the quotes and one to finish the entire sentence.
I'm afraid the American rule just smacks to me of a simplistic, one-size fits all, this is just the way we do it rule rather than a rule that makes any sort of sense. The UK rule makes sense because what happens within the quotes is internally coherent. Which is something I think we can all aspire to
