Lil, I don't know anything about the MBT shoes. As I recall, the first pair of walking shoes/sneakers I had were in a wide width...I just laced up the good foot more tightly.

I was pretty good about staying off the leg. I made a few mistakes here and there, but overall, I was a compliant patient.

I think you are doing really well. I haven't head from you what it was like when you began to walk for the first time, so I am assuming it was a non issue. I remember having trouble. I had to will myself mentally to walk. I also had pins-n-needles senstations when I stepped down, and it took awhile for that to get better. You are sailing though, in comparison!
