For years, I had to get up at 5:30 a.m. Every day. It sucked. No one on this planet should get up before the rising of the sun. It's not natural. As a matter of fact, I went to see an Indian Shaman from South America speak once, and he said that one of the major contributors to western culture miscontent and illness is that we do not honor Mother Nature's clock. Rising when it is light, going to bed when it is dark. I laughed and told him he must not have young children... and he told me he had eight...
So, anyways... now that I am self-employed... my usual rising time is 9 a.m. (unless I am carting kids to school, and then I come home and sleep another hour).
I very much admire your sense of 'only work as much as you have to.' I have been on a mission to minimize output (monetarily and work wize) for some time now. This goes against my mother's plan of me owning her business someday. I've told her and told her that I don't want to work that hard, or be that stressed ever again (I did that once in my life.... the Rat Race... got completely caught up in in, too... it SUCKED).
You sound like you are in a very good place with the bf, and I am so very, very, very happy for you.
