This should tell you that he CAN take care of himself and that when push comes to shove he knows when he's having an emergency.
Bacterial pneumonia is better than viral, I think, because it can be treated.

Please don't put this down to IC fearing the wrath of Miss IC. Give him credit for making the right decision with regard to his health, even though you weren't around.
