I also believe that a person can change... IF and only if, they have sufficient motivation to do so.
One thing we know for sure, is that, left to himself, your husband will not change. Sometimes, external motivations, for specific things come up. Such as the city providing "motivation" for him to clean up your yard.As far as your relationship with him goes, though.. seems pretty clear that if you wish him to change, you'll need to provide some kind of motivation yourself, directly.
Whether you provide positive, or negative, or both kinds of motivation, is up to you. I previously suggested a heavy dose of positive motivation.
I hope you'll find the courage to confront him about it one way or another, for your own sake and happiness.
