Judging by my wife's reaction when we physically separated a number of years ago I imagine that your wife is truly upset about not being with you for Christmas.

My wife cried as she was walking out the door back then. I asked her why she was crying if she was so adamant about leaving. She said "We have so many memories here, this is the house you lived in when we first met 16 years ago. It hurts to walk away from all of that."

It makes sense. As easy as they seem to make it look there has to be a lot of turmoil going on inside - at least at certain times of the year. I'm sure she's dealing with a lot of guilt right now as well.
