I think your email was very honest, and you got honesty from him right back. Seems like he feels ok contact you, so that's a good thing, at this level, separation, the communication between you guys seems to be heading in the right direction.
Take it at face value, keep moving forward and keeping a PMA, he sees your good qualities, and for now, that is a very good thing.
