Thank you, Professor Einstein! Well, maybe we should give him credit for what he might have meant, which is that the rate of heat transfer (from foot to ice, versus foot to ice water) might be faster. Whatev'.

My thoughts and goodwill and prayers and karma etc. will be with you all day.

Lil,

Are you supposed to place your foot in a chest full of ice periodically for 2-3 weeks?

When I had a severe sprain, the best thing for me to do (recommended by a sports trainer) was to put my foot in a bucket of iced water for 7 minutes at a time, 3 times a day (followed up by ankle exercises). Is that perhaps what you are supposed to do?

Uh, no. Absolutely not. It is NOT colder melted.

There. I'm a five, and I couldn't rest until that was set straight. \:\)

Good luck with the surgery Lillie. You'll be fine, but I know it's scary. Sending good thoughts.

I know, I know! He meant that when you put salt into the water, freeze it, and then melt it it is colder than ordinary ice, for a while at least.

Hairdog, does it seem to you that we're giving the guy too much credit?

Right SG, that is how ice cream is made.

Ice Cream recipe at top of the page. Why melting ice absorbs more heat at the bottom of the page. http://chemistry.about.com/cs/howtos/a/aa020404a.htm
Read: Explanation
Ice has to absorb energy in order to melt, changing the phase of water from a solid to a liquid……….

Lil, the problem is if you cool off your foot too much there might be skin and cellular damage. Making your foot/ankle too cold for too long is a big problem. Do what the rehab people tell you to do.

i bet the icing goes along the lines of Chrom's post. (recommended by a sports trainer) was to put my foot in a bucket of iced water for 7 minutes at a time,

Ditto on what IC said. (((((Lil)))))
