I have no doubt why she wants to do the small family thing at home...fewer questions from the kids (do they know you might be getting divorced?), aleviates her guilt at the thought of you being alone, but also gets her out of whatever uncomfortable situation she would be in if you did come to her family's celebration.
maybe its just me, but that's how I read it.

Sally - She has no guilt about me being alone. But I agree that she would be uncomfortable in the family situation, and knows that I would not be.
