The text messages looks like he is talking to himself and excusing himself in his own mind for what he did. It's amazing how they can forgive themselves so easily.
I was reading in another forum here that it's probably because they are dealing with their feelings longer than we are because of the time we were kept in the dark. It made sense to me. They could rationalize their guilt.
