I agree that you should let him know you were not snooping.It's hard on our pride and on our logics they can dare not to trust us but you are entitled to defend yourself and this does not mean you won't be following DB's boundaries. Just let him know, don't give him the excuses he needs to manipulate you.
I believe you will make a big statement by showing him that he was not working hard as he said as he was not trusting you either and by not doing that and falling back in his old ways he broke all the action plan you were working on. I would also take back the money, it's time for the stick.
Take away his road blocks and the whys for not doing what he promised to you.
