Re his mom's cancer: BF is in warrior mode right now... that place where you feel that if you work hard enough, sacrifice, do everything "right," you can save the other person. In fact, her prognosis is fairly good. She has Hodgkin's (not non-Hodgkin's, which is a quite different), and except for her age, the outlook is good. He does tend to move from one crisis to the next... this is the latest in the series of crises he (and we) have faced. They all tend to be genuine and not of his making.
