First off you are really sweet to say that about finding the positive. That is something I've worked HARD on. I used to always see only the negative, too (or dismiss the positives in "favor" of the negatives). Thank you!!
About the pup... hmm.
With red eyes my first two thoughts are allergies or conjunctivitis (yes dogs get it too). It seems like every boxer I have ever known seemed like it constantly had red eyes, so I wonder if boxers are more prone to that.
On the "eye boogers" - are they pretty "dry" or kinda sticky? Also are they yellow or green, or just a kinda brown/gray? (sorry to be gross... but it makes a difference!). Every dog I've had or known got "eye boogers" too... but the brown/gray ones were no biggie, while sticky, green or yellow may mean an infection.
I'm thinking if the "eye boogers" are nasty it's probably pink eye... if not, more likely allergies. Of course not a vet! This is just going off dogs I've had and being a dog lover.
If you suspect allergies maybe you can ask the vet about trying a small dose of Benadryl and see if it helps. I'd check with them for dosing and such though - would hate to guess wrong and overdose, especially a pup. My dog used to get allergies sometimes and half of a kid-size Benadryl worked great. And as a bonus she liked the grape chewables so I didn't even have to force pills down her.. she thought it was a treat!
If it's an infection you'll probably have to take him in and get some eye drops to clear it up. Oddly enough I've found it pretty easy to do eye drops on dogs... they don't love it, but I almost think it's easier than giving them pills they don't want.
