your absolutely right not to try and figure it out. You could end up being totally wrong, and if you ask directly you probably won't get an absolute correct answer.
Don't let H's problems and mood bring you down either. especially if he brings the car late. don't give him the satisfaction that he's trying to make your life miserable (subconsciously I believe). Those who aren't happy try to bring everyone else to their level so they don't seem so unhappy and seem more the norm.
