I came across an interesting scientific study on speed-dating. Before the speed-dating event, the researchers asked men and women what they were looking for in a man/woman and how important those various traits would be. Both the men and women indicated that there were a number of traits they were seeking. However, the results after the event revealed that men picked the women they would choose to date almost solely on the factor of physical appearance. Women did use other factors but these factors weren't the ones that they indicated that they thought they would use either. The men pretty much just had a waterline level of acceptability in terms of appearance and were willing to date any of the women who were at least that physically appealing. The women picked men, not based on the male's appearance but based on their own appearance relative to a few factors combined to rate the male's level of attractiveness. So a woman who considered herself to be only moderately physically attractive would indicate that she wanted to date men who she judged to be moderately attractive given a few relevant factors and she wouldn't pick men who fell either above or below this range.
