That is awful. Do you live in a very small community or do you all just run in the same circles? I have heard of affairs that were connected to the family this way. I would think it is excrutiating to deal with. Perhaps this OP has very low self esteem. I would think any OP has to have some kind of past issues orelse why would they put themselves in such a dreadful R? I am so sorry, but your mom is right. It is not about OP, it is about your spouse's need to feel an ego boost with someone lower than the people he knows and loves from the past.
