Fearless I can see in the model you give how the two concepts are opposite and I agree with what you're saying.
I think mostly what I have a problem with is the idea that has been touched on already and that is that fusion and differentiation are absolutes. I think that the original idea of differentiation was that there is a scale of differentiation not an either or proposition. This may have been abandoned for something more like the list of you posted as it probably has allot more practical application than a scale.
It just seems to me that if you're not at the top or the bottom of the scale it's going to be allot more confusing if the map your working from only has two points.
