Goal, I think that is a hard concept. The trouble is we tend to try and put God in a box, and understnd Him, rather than realizing that He is much greater than us. Remember the vision in Isiah about the corner of His robe filling the Temple. OK a metaphor, but in Job God asks Job, sarcastically if Job was there when the world was created.
We are dealing with something we don't understand, and a set of principles that are almost impossible to live by, and a love that is so intense we can't grasp it. We are redeemed by God's love for us, not by our own goodness.
Perhaps it is like with our own children. The little things they do can be as hurtful as the big things. Perhaps that is what it means: I don't know, I am not a theologian.
FWIW I have real trouble in thinking of homosexuality as sin. As you say, many live together in excellent and respectful relationships.
I guess I am a mystic: I haven't put my brain on hold, but recognise that are things we simply don't understand.
