How does one stay positive, at peace, and calm, when it feels like everything is crashing around one?

I went to a Toastmasters meeting yesterday (a GAL activity), and someone gave this quote (hope I remembered it correctly):

"Worrying is like meditating on your fears." So true, and yet how do we stop when one's finances are being compromised, your children may be put through some upheavals, still dealing with marital problems, etc.?

I guess this is the nature of life, and we have to just appreciate when there is a spot of serenity, and things occasionally falling into place along the way. I guess gratitude should be my attitude. I do have a lot to be thankful for ... just have to remind myself constantly what they are. \:\)

Sometimes it helps me to recognize that, in reality, it's all in God's hands. He cares and the best will come from whatever happens, whether we can see that right now is maybe more a question of our limits as human beings rather than anything to do with reality. When I let go, I feel better. I often realize all my destructive "meditating" was on things I have absolutely no control over anyway, so what was the point? Hope this helps a bit.
BTW great job in checking out the Toastmasters!
