Like I said I am no expert but.... as Theo would say you have to lovingly detach. Ya don't want to shut the door al of the way. In reality this may have been a problem she saw in you. Maybe in the past she didn't think you noticed or didn't pay her compliments. I am not saying you didn't but you will see what we do and what they think we do are two different things.
