I think it has to be handwritten. (Make a copy or two for yourself to keep. It would not shock me if she throws it away at some point, but then wants it back. Plus, you might want to read it every few months, one way or another, to help avoid repeating history.) She can keep handwritten. I've got a couple of shoeboxes full of letters my wife (not at the time) and I wrote back in college. Of course, we had to use stone tablets back then! Handwritten is just way more personal. I like the idea of doing a little at a time, I also have handwriting that goes from bad to horrible in five minutes or so.
