Here's what I finally did: called L (who is a friend/acquaintance) and just asked her 'I know you can't really tell me anything, but do we actually owe this $1,500 or was that just a retainer he would have paid had he decided to go through w/ the D?' She said she was really sorry that I rec'd that bill, that we do not owe anything. She said ethically she couldn't say anything, but that it is not anything she is working on. I told her that things are going really well and I just didn't want to have to bring it up to H if I didn't have to. She said that H had told her H before he left that things were going really well. End of saga.
