It is good practice, you also do not want to burn any bridges with you IL if you two stay together, they are also the grandparents.
I also would not expect yours or mine to be rude to us, mine are not being overly nice, it is like I said, nothing going on out of the ordinary.
Not try to anylize it either, but if I did, I would have to say they all think "her family", that all is going to end well and the family will stay together.
