Ah, but that would be her issue if she read into his words something that isn't there and it offended her.
By actually putting the words out there HE would be subliminaly putting the pressure on her, the other way around she's putting it on herself. See the difference? It's subtle granted.
"saw this in a catalog and just had to get it for you...Love, COG" Short, sweet, nothing flowery, non-commital...maybe leave a flower with it....then don't bring it up at all.
That's perfect! I'll get her a pretty little flower with it too but not a red rose or anything meaningful. Thanks!
Love,
COG

Definitely DO NOT do the candles, bottle of wine stuff - that would be way too much pressure on her.
I also wouldn't say "have fun with it" - that's just opening up a whole other can of worms
I agree with GEL - keep it simple. You could go to the extent of wrapping it up if you want to (simply once again) and just leaving a note in it that said "thought of you when I saw this"
Or, better still - leave it laying somewhere with her favorite flower laying across it and nothing else. Therefore she would have to ask you - and at that time you could say you thought of her when you saw it and thought she would like it
I used to give my H "I Love You" presents. And that's what I called them. I would give them to him for no specific reason and when he would say "what's this for" I would say "it's an "I love you" present"

I think that's the best idea -- just leave it laying on the bed and/or just put it in a gift bag somewhere for her to find at her leisure, but not necessarily opening it right in front of you. Then see what she does w/ it.

Okay, well the neighbor has some very pretty Gerbera daisys growing in their yard. So I'll cut one nice and fresh tomorrow morning when she's out. And here's the note I'm thinking about leaving:
"W, VC emailed an advertisment to my address, and when I saw this, I just had to get it for you."

Sounds perfect for the note - be careful about that type of daisy though as they lose their "perkiness" very quickly outside of water. So unless she will see it within no more than half an hour, it might look quite pitiful
If the packaging looks nice, I would say just leave it
