Oh man! That's not a comforting thing to have happen now is it? One thing you know though is that if he's calling from his cell phone, or receiving a call from his cell phone....you will eventually see the call log....right? It's also possible he's in a spot in the city where it's hard to get phone access...it just so happens there are spots within the building I work where I do not get phone reception.
