You are right. I guess its weird how sometimes you don't think of your job as your purpose. Its just something to pay the bills. Granted, I LOVE my job, and I am excellent at it (if I may say so). I guess I just had this romaticized notion of some grand adventure that is your purpose in life. Like maybe having sex in every city of 500,000 or more in the world (the cool thing being with the population boom, you'll never actually finish). Ah well ...

Yeah, but Chrome...our "purpose" in life isn't necessarily related to our close/intimate relationships...often the "purpose" is a much bigger than that. It can spider out much further than just your immediate family.
You have the good fortune to do something you love as your career...which makes you a much more effective professor to your students. So much of your time is spent working at something you truly love...you are quite fortunate in that. So many of us work at jobs we don't really care for for so many of our waking hours (currently I am one of those folks). Remember that when you find yourself getting down, count the blessings you do have when you start wishing for things you don't.

True. But ... the problem is the thing I want the most is something I have to actively strive for more than is normal, face my deepest personal fears and fight my FOO, and perhaps come to terms with the fact that I may never get it. I know MANY people have this same problem, but it still hurts.
