There is going to be a lot of that talk, given the CT tragedy (copycats always come out after these), and the superstition that tomorrow is the "end of times." Don't they already have a 1/2 day? Even though I am a teacher, I can tell you that most of tomorrow will be movies, class parties, etc - not much learning as socializing. If it makes all of you more comfortable, it isn't a terrible day to miss.
I heard that some places in Michigan closed their schools today just because...
I would ask about options for writing the finals. I do expect since the police are aware of the threat - they will be all over the school. Still - can't be safe enough sometimes.
Marc's high school has always been very security conscious but now they've gone into overdrive even locking the doors to the inside courtyard that can't be accessed unless you are already inside the school! The kids use it to shortcut between wings of the school so imagine their surprise on Monday when then ran full force into the doors and smashed their heads into it!

He was really pushing to take his finals. I spoke with a friend whose brother is a cop and also has a daughter going to the same school. I let him go due to the extra security. I told him to stay alert and if any time he felt uncomfortable to let a teacher know. The day went off smoothly. They already have to use their student ID to get in the building, so that helps.
I had a client come in just a bit a go and bring me a bunch of flowers. Lovely! Made my day, even with my amped up sneezing due to pollen!

I think you made your decision based on learning all the facts and sounds like it all went well. You also gave him the "out" by telling him how to get out of an uncomfortable situation. Good parenting!
I hope you and your family enjoy a very happy, healthy Christmas.
